What is the Relay For Life?

We are gearing up for the Relay For Life! If you’re free Saturday, May 18, and want to join us to support the American Cancer Society, we’d love to have you!

What is the Relay For Life?

The Relay For Life is an American Cancer Society event that is filled with fun, support, friends and exercise for a great cause!

The Relay For life is 28 years old this month! In Tacoma, in May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track. He raising $27,000 for the American Cancer Society and created a new fundraising event.

It’s not that intense anymore. In most cases, this is how it works: One person starts a team to walk in a Relay for Life event on a designated place and time. Usually there are other teams walking too- adding to the fun and companionship. There is a Survivor’s Lap, where all survivors walk the first lap to honor the fact that they beat cancer. Next comes a Caregiver’s lap and then a lap for everyone to walk together. The laps continue from there.

There is also an inspirational Fight Back Ceremony, which is emotionally powerful in encouraging everyone to continue work to fight cancer all year long. And, there is also a beautiful and touching Luminaria Ceremony. This takes place after dark and consists of personalized luminaries lighting up the track. Each luminary honors someone we have lost to cancer.

In this Relay For Life, Team Eric be walking in Mesquite at 2675 Bear Drive on Saturday, May 18, 2013 6:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m.

6 hours of walking??

No- that’s why it’s a “relay!” There is usually just 1-2 team members walking at a time. You actually don’t need to stay the whole time- but most people enjoy it so much they don’t want to leave!

Or, you don’t even have to be a walker; you can join Team Eric as a supporter and share your talents rooting everyone on from the sidelines. You can also participate by donating to Team Eric as well.

Why is EDDF participating in the Relay for Life?

In addition to an unwavering commitment to promoting healthy living and fighting all types of cancer, the American Cancer Society has dedicated resources to sarcoma research, awareness and education. They are truly with us in this fight and offer many exceptional comprehensive resources on their website.
