Every day we see celebrities and role models in the news for various reasons. Whether it is good or bad, there are always people looking up to them. Mark Herzlich, of the NY Giants, is a celebrity who uses his role in the limelight for a great reason. He has taken his experience with sarcoma and decided to raise awareness of it – and support people going through treatments.
Mark Herzlich was at the top of his game, playing football for Boston College, when he was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma. At first he thought the pain he felt was a sports injury- a common misdiagnosis. His treatment included chemotherapy, radiation and removal of the tumor. Today he is cancer-free.
“When people hear that you have cancer, they say, ‘I’m so sorry,’ but Mark wanted me to stay positive about it. He told me to be strong, have faith, and to know that I can do exactly what he did,” JoLynn Johnson, told ESPN about a call she had with Herzlich.
When Herzlich heard that JoLynn Johnson had just endured major surgery to remove a malignant tumor from her leg he decided to call her to offer support. During that call he was traveling to the Super Bowl- something doctors never saw in his future.
Herzlich is active in both organized events to drive awareness of sarcoma, and as evident in his call to Johnson, he also takes time to simply sit and offer words of support.
While Herzlich is a great example of a survivor helping others, you don’t need to be a celebrity to support people whose lives have been touched by cancer. Visit EricDDavisFoundation.org to see how you can spread awareness of sarcoma.
